A ball of ice appears in the pouch as Leath handles the weapon. He releases, unsure of what will happen.
[Attack roll: 15. Leath deals 3 damage and 2 cold damage.]
The project strikes true, and flash freezes the mage's head. The head thaws, but it is obvious the mage is no longer conscious. He falls down to the ground, and Erik cuts off his head to be sure.
"Wretched traitors," he spits over the corpses of the firing squad. "Wait until the Emperor hears about this."
Just then, Olaf runs into the room.
"Sir, I bring dire news! The Emperor has stubbornly decided to make a public appearance without alerting us."
"WHAT?!" The Varangian curses, pointing to the bodies. "Where is he? He must know of Cesare's treachery!"
"His Majesty's in the Hippodrome, and Cesare's men are being mobilized," Olaf says. "There have been sightings of a red dragon as well. I thought it best to summon you."
"Indeed," Erik said. He turns to Julio and the party. "You, you're coming with me. Take what you can from these corpses, and I will meet you at the Hippodrome."
Other Varangians enter, and begin claiming firearms from fallen mercenaries. Julio and his men approach the party. "I have seen Rome fall once before," he says. "But I do not wish to see it happen again. I will treat the wounded at the Hippodrome."
He and his men leave as the looting continues. Jiao grabs some ammo and gunpowder for himself and Hans as they head off.
[The adventure concludes in Part 4-3: A Tale of Three Caesars.]
