Background: Born to a scholar’s family outside of Nanjing, Wu Jiao (or Jiao Wu in Western convention) was groomed for the imperial examinations since childhood. During his own studies, he was tutored by a local Mohist scholarly group, the Order of the Fire Drake. The Order devised various strategies and weapons with which the common people could defend themselves from mundane and supernatural threats, from bandits and barbarians to spell-casters. Wu Jiao took the teachings of Mo Zi to heart, but also grew interested in the stories of Magistrate Di Gong An, a famed Chinese investigator.
While his examination results were promising, but his career was to be a short one. Wu Jiao actually served as a local magistrate for a few weeks in a remote village along the northwestern border. He had some reforms in mind, but the town was razed by steppe raiders. While his black powder weapons scared them off and he healed the survivors, the village was annihilated. He took up the lifestyle of a wandering philosopher, a juzi, afterwards, eventually making his way to Europe.
[Notes: Jiao Wu’s first firearm was effectively a blunderbuss, an early smoothbore scattergun, utilizing a bulkier and more complex version of a wheel-lock mechanism, instead of a matchlock or flintlock. The trigger is more like a longer release lever on a Chinese crossbow than Renaissance period arquebus designs.]
