From within the folds of his robe, Psychlis pulls out a small but thick notebook filled with perfectly-printed parchment and a sharpened piece of charcoal for notetaking. He scribbles out the following note and shows it to Alicia:
"I can use the automated defenses of this place to help out Leath and Jiao. Feel like hunting down some drow with our new Viking friends?"
Telepathically, he signals to the automated defenses of this bizarre place. 'Use the electrified shielding to protect Leath and Jiao; that should help with the Starspawn. Send the subject pacification drones and dominated subject assistance after the drow.'
Tapping the Viking warband leader on the shoulder, Psychlis points to the retreating drow. Scribbling out a quick note, he shows it to the Viking: "Those drow poisoned your men. Let us slaughter them for their dishonor!"
[Quickly reloading his crossbow, Psychlis begins to pursue the retreating drow] [perception check for trap]

As the drow head for the door, a small unit of duergar with caps similar to Psychlis' charge out. Behind them are centaur like constructs with a mace or club like weapon in one hand and shield in the other. The duergar begin forming a phalanx-line formation and advancing on the drow while the constructs' electrified batons spark to life. The drow attempt to rush past them, only for the two fighters to be mangled beyond recognition, and their leader trampled by the construct.
The Vikings begin cheering, but quickly turn towards the horrific Starspawn, their weapons raised despite the creature's alien appearance.
A metallic fence arises around the Starspawn and gnomes, and lightning crackles to life. The constructs and dominated duergar advance before the Vikings do, trying to keep position while figuring out some method of damaging the creature.
"Ready crossbows!" a dominated duergar shouts. The unit immediately lays prone on the ground and draws out heavy crossbows, readying themselves for a volley.
Meanwhile, the sheep is now a dwarf. Unlike the duergar, he is bald and clean shaven. He wears a helmet similar to Psychlis and is clad in orange robes. "Thanks for slaying that witch!" he shouts at Psychlis. "Stand back. The defenses won't stop until that thing's dead!"
Hans, meanwhile, thinks he hears a voice calling to him: "The Master needs the orb to awaken. Give it to me."
[Battles have merged. Current Order: Alicia, Leath, Hans, Psychlis, Jiao, Viking warband, defender constructs/duergar, and Starspawn/gnomes.]

The strange creature summoned by the gnomes turns Leath's stomach; somehow a feeling of malice (nearly a cosmic indifference) towards all things earthly exudes from the creature, as if the humans and dwarves around it were so many ants to be crushed. Leath feels a chill sweep through him, and he avoids the creature for the moment, preferring to attack its summoners and perhaps dispense with it that way. He turns his fury towards the gnomes. [Leath's Flaming Sphere should still be in play, as it lasts for 1 round/level and he's level 3, unless somehow the gnomes cancelled it, but since they were focusing on summoning Cthulhu, I don't think that was the case. He directs the Flaming Sphere towards the gnomes, unless it has been extinguished somehow, in which case he hurls a stone from his sling in their direction.]

Hans shakes his head trying to get rid of the voice. He hurriedly loads his musket and fires at the abomination [grit point].

Alicia notices her earth elemental is now closer to the gnomes than the starspawn, right in position to assault them.
---
Leath's flaming sphere travels over the laboratory floor, crushing one of the gnomes, but the other leaps out of the way. For a split second, the starspawn flickers out of existence.
[Spell deals 12 points of fire damage to gnomes.]

[Hans' attack roll=7, miss]
The merchant's musket ball ricochets against the ceiling somewhere. The voice continues in his head. "Why battle the inevitable? Surrender the orb and be devoured first."

If she could get rid of the gnome the starspawn problem would go away with it. She scrambles toward Hans and the others so she can have her elemental finish this. With a swift yell in Terran and a click of the trigger of her crossbow she hopes for the best in ending this as the boulder of a creature crashes down on him.
[Elemental attacks gnome and crossbow bot fired for good measure]

Psychlis looks around and picks up on what Alicia's planning. Kill the head, kill the body. Psychlis takes aim at one of the gnomes with his crossbow and fires as well.

The creature's hand reaches for Hans, stopped only momentarily by the electric field that appeared.
---
[Psychlis and Alicia miss, but earth elemental gets confirmed crit.]
The crossbow bolts go wild, but the earth elemental has far more luck. It bowls down one of the gnomes, never to stand again, and swings its rocky arms into the surviving twin. The gnome flies against the lab's wall, splattering like an insect. The starspawn looks down at the summoner, but vanishes a split second later. An awkward silence falls over the laboratory. All apparent threats are destroyed, and the Vikings let out a grand cheer. They lift up Psychlis and Alicia, carrying them around the room in a makeshift parade. The dominated duergar and constructs follow them like a marching band.
[The adventure continues on in Part 2-3: Revelations.]
